Novy Jerusalim - a monument of Russian History
and Culture of the 17th - 19th cc.

he history display is on the ground floor of the Refectory Chambers in the "old stone premises". It presents the conception of Moscow Region Palestine, history events and processes which prepared the ground for this conception and for its realization. The founder of the Novy Jerusalim Resurrection Monastery is represented as a significant church and social figure, the founder of the 17th century convents - the Valdai Iberia Monastery and the Kei Cross Monastery. The unique mid 17th century exhibits: the copy of the God's coffin and early portrait "Patriarch Nikon and the Novy Jerusalim Monastery Brethren" are displayed in the section dedicated to the Novy Jerusalim Monastery in the 17th century.

The brilliant pages of the Monastery history of the 18th century are connected with the reconstruction of the Resurrection Cathedral in 1740 - 1750. The fragments of the authentic interior decoration of the mid-18th century are the most significant exhibits in this section. The work of the famous architect M.F.Kazakov in the Novy Jerusalim Monastery is illustrated.
In the 19th - early 20th century Novy Jerusalim was one of the most popular pilgrim centers in Russia. They published post-cards and lithographs with the Monastery views, booklets describing "Russian Palestine". In the 19th century the scientific investigation of Novy Jerusalim history and its rich library began. The Resurrection and Nikon Chronicles (their copies preserved in the Monastery) were published. In the 1870s Archimandrite Leonid (Kavelin) founded a museum in the Monastery.
