Shown are the events of the massacre of the rebellion of the monks in Solovetsk monastery against the Patriarch Nikon’s church reforms. The picture illustrates the book by S.Denisov «Istoriya ob otseh i stradal’tseh solovetskih», written in 1730-ies. By now six variants of wall-sheets on this subject are known, three of which seem to be closely inter-related and all come back to the same original, while the other three were executed independently, although their authors followed the traditional way of interpretation of the subject. The picture demonstrates considerable dependence (text and images) on the manuscript novel «Opisaniye litsevoye velikoy osady i razoreniya monastyrya solovetskogo», written in the late XVIII cent., which originated from Moscow workshop, where master M.V.Grigoriev is known to work in the late XVIII - early XIX cent. Hypothetical attribution of this picture to Grigoriev, done by E.I.Itkina (SHM), is based on the stylistic similarity to the signed works of the artist.
