Many famous people are connected with Ivanovo land: Russian historian Ivan Tsvetaev who founded Pushkin Arts Museum in Moscow. He is also known as the father of Marina Tsvetaeva, Russia’s outstanding poetess. Some great other names are astronomer V.Bredikhin, poet K.Balmont, film producer A.Tarkovsky, USSR state leaders P.Postyshev, M.Frunze, A.Bubnov.
The city has contributed a lot to the history of Russia. In 1905 here took place the famous Ivanovo-Voznesensk strike during which the first Soviet of workers’ deputies was created. To commemorate those events a memorial complex was erected on the Talka river.

Today’s Ivanovo is a large culture center. Visitors are welcome to museums, drama and musical comedy theaters, puppet show, circus.
Among the most attractive sights is Ivanovo state society of historical and local lore museums which is named after D.G.Burylin who was a local factory owner, patron of arts and enlightener. In his will he gave the city a priceless gift, the result of his entire life - hie museum whose funds contain unique collections and exhibits of various kinds - history, local lore, arts, ethnography.
Ivanovo is a city of high scientific potential, a city of students - there are 7 higher education institutions and numerous technical schools.
There are various sorts of artistic activities in the city. The nation’s soul lives in folt arts and crafts - wicker-work, embroidery, costumes, carving, ceramics. Not far from Ivanovo there are old Russian villages of Palekh and Kholuy - centers of miniature lacquer painting, the black boxes known worldwide. Their bright sparkling paints, finest golden ornament make them fairy-like and poetic, cast a spell and admiration, attract you to the world of original Russian arts.
