Complexes of Ivanovo textile mills situated along the banks of the Uvod river are considered unique specimens of Russian industrial architecture of the turn of the century. Architecturally the city was dominated by the famous churches which were designed by K. Ton, F. Shekhtel, I. Bondarenko, S. Napalkov, P. Snurilov. By the beginning of the 20th century religious services were held in 19 churches and 9 chapels of Ivanovo - Voznesensk. The most ancient church of the area is the wooden church of Dormition which was built in the 17th century.
