At 5 p.m. the battle of Borodino was over. Later Napoleon said "from all my battles the most terrible was that which I gave near Moscow. The French proved themselves deserving the victory and Russians won the fame to be invincible". Both sides lost about 80.000 in this battle. Under Russian General Barclay de Tolly who was looking for the death five horses were killed but he was safe. At the canvas we see the Rayevskiy battery placed in the center of Russian position. Russians and French were occupying it by turns. At the beginning it was attacked by troops of Vice-King . Then Ermolov who was sent by Kutusov to the left wing of Russian army got together everything that was under his hand returned the battery to Russians. 28-years-old General Kutaysov the Chief of the artillery of the 1st army was killed there. No one had seen his death. Only when his horse covered with his blood was caught his fate became clear. Later the French doubled the energy of attacks and seized the battery again. General Likhachev bravely resisted to superior enemy forces, was several times wounded by french bayonets and captured. And this is the tragic result of the battle - the mess of the human bodies is in the ditch near the battery. 80 thousand of heroes found their death in sake of ambitious goals of one man that could say himself "enough! stop now!" |
