The Library

The Library is one of the most comfortable rooms in the house. There is a fireplace and a balcony. The main part of the archive that was compiled by numerous generations of the inhabitants of Muranovo is kept in the Library.
The most impressing decoration of the Library are the heavy volumes of the famous French Encyclopedia of Diderot and D'Alambere.
One of the most valuable rarities is "The Russian Encyclopedical lexicon" by Pluchare.
In the library are also kept a lot of Russian and foreign fiction books. There even are some rare publications like the first issue of A. Kantemir's "Satires", "The Journey From St. Petersburg to Moscow" by Radischev (Gertzen's publication in London), the academic issue of Derzhavin's works, several collection of Pushkin's works (including the first posthumous edition) and the first publication of novels by Goncharov, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy etc.
Besides the Russian classical literature there also are some Russian and foreign novels. For example, these are "Abelard and Eloise, or The Valuable Collection of The Letters of These Unhappy Lovers"(1816), "The Two Brides, or Love, Faithfulness and Patience" by Augustine Lafontaine (1818), Julia, or The Mazini Dungeon" by Anne Radcliffe (1819) and many others.
There also are some rare cookery-books, collections of card-patiences and books of home cures, which are today extremely rare.
Beside that there are a lot of books on history, geography, genealogy, law, pedagogics and art. Theological literature makes up a special department of the Library.
Unfortunately there is a very small quantity of books that belonged to Boratynsky. The only copy of "The Twilight" with Boratynsky's dedication to M. Glinka is kept in the Cabinet.
However, 44 items remain from Tyutchev's library. These books tell us a lot about the literary taste of the poet.
The interior of the library is supplemented with engravings and lithographs with historical and genre scenes. There also are some portraits of statesmen. Among them is the portrait of N. Mordvinov painted in an extravagant manner. Mordvinov was the only member of The Supreme Criminal Court who denied the necessity of execution of the leaders of the rebellion on December 14, 1825. One of the rarities is a portrait of Grand Prince Constantine (1835), the heir to the throne who gave up his rights.
In the Library there also are some unique items like the 18th century telescope, a bureau with a lot of drawers and secret locks and a large clock with a calendar that showed the full date. The clock was made by Augustin Martin and belonged to F.I. Tyutchev.
