The main informational display will take place through the discussion of films from the position of various scientific disciplines, surveys, and a competition of audience sympathy. The conference will include discussions of problems of the preservation of cultural heritage and the philosophical-anthropological, psychological-pedagogical, artistic, and informational-technological aspects of visual anthropology. A competition of debuts will allow the equal competition of professional researchers and university students. In the conference hall there will be exhibits of photographs and modern information technology.

In separate rooms there will be thematic exhibits and seminars oriented toward grade-school education, television, and representatives of visual anthropology schools from separate countries. Archival films will be shown, as well as works dedicated to northern peoples, countries of the Muslim world, the Caucasus, and others. Special interest should be drawn by the best films of recent years, as recognized by well-known international festivals.

The organizing committee invites all interested people and organizations to take part in the Second Moscow International Festival of Visual Anthropology and provide organizational, technical, informational, and financial help in its preparation and staging.

The goal of the festival is to show how, with the aid of modern informational technology, a person can not only convey the sense of value, beauty, and diversity of cultures of the world, but also bring out deep commonality, giving hope for the mutual understanding and interaction of separate worlds.

Esoteric quasi-realism.

The conceptual project "Newest Scrolls" is an attempt to understand this world using the tools of digital photography. The author positions this project as esoteric quasi-realism and terms this contemporary photography. The sequence of images consisting of black and white photographs combined with drawings is inseparably connected to the text modules - sort of philosophic messages that are at the same the titles of the photographs. The Newest Scrolls are metaphoric in their essence; each title postulates a certain outcome of human existence in this physical world. The project concept is a visualization of these philosophic postulates and the statement of the fact that the human civilization in its development, reached the point of destruction of all ideas about itself, when old life dies and the age of a new civilization, a new generation of the human race begins.

The project consists of 12 works combined into one sequence of images.

Nianhua: Chinese Popular Pictures in the Hermitage
23 December, 2003 - February, 2004

The exhibition (rooms N 255-257) shows over two hundred nianhua pictures, divided into New Year, theater, history, genre scenes and icons sections.

The genre of nianhua includes various icons associated with cultic and ritual aspects of New Year celebrations, and the

so-called "paper symbols" expressing New Year's greetings in an enigmatic form. Understanding the puzzle depended on the character of Chinese script, where hieroglyphs may be written differently but be pronounced in the same way. Nianhua pictures were books for the illiterate people, who were acquainted with the country's literature by street story-tellers, theatrical performances and the popular Peking musical drama. Landscape as a separate genre is rare in popular pictures. Images which in a symbolic form express greetings look especially attractive, though their message remains obscure to the uninitiated.
